Genital herpes during pregnancy is a serious concern because it can result in neonatal herpes, a potentially life-threatening condition for newborns. The risk is highest if the mother experiences an active outbreak during delivery, as the baby can contract the virus during childbirth. To minimize this risk, doctors often recommend antiviral medications during the last trimester to suppress outbreaks. If active herpes lesions are present at the time of labor, a cesarean section may be performed to prevent transmission to the baby. These precautions are essential for safeguarding the health of both mother and child.
